Paco's Story

Paco is an 11-year-old Chihuahua mix who is ready to leave his bad luck of 2024 behind and make 2025 his best year yet! This resilient little guy was surrendered to a local shelter through no fault of his own. The shelter described him as “fearful, shut down, and growly,” but we saw the sweet senior underneath and couldn’t say no.

We quickly learned that Paco has no shortage of love to give! He’s a belly and butt rub connoisseur, an enthusiastic kisser, and a vocal little guy who lets you know when he’s excited or wants pets. While he’s not always a “jump in your lap” kind of dog, if you place him there, he’ll stay for hours of snuggles. He loves to follow his people around the house but he is also free-roam trustworthy when home alone. When you return, he’ll greet you by spinning in excited circles. Paco is the perfect gentlemen with excellent house manners. He is house-trained and great with kids and dogs, but can be a little bit intimidated by enthusiastic larger dogs and smaller kids.

When Paco came into rescue, we discovered that his back legs were barely functional, he had a heart murmur, and a mast cell tumor. The mast cell tumor has been removed – it was very low grade so we don’t expect any issues, but he should be monitored for any additional lumps or bumps. A cardiology visit revealed that he has the very beginnings of a common problem in older small dogs – mitral valve regurgitation. He doesn’t need anything at this time other than yearly cardiology visits. Paco’s back legs have improved dramatically, though he is still a bit wobbly at times. Visits with his regular vet and neurology have determined that the issues with his back legs is most likely due to IVDD (disc disease). He will likely require long-term medication, but he LOVES taking his meds wrapped in cheese. He is not able to jump or use stairs, which is perfectly ok to him as he is a pro at ramps and doesn’t mind being carried.

Paco is looking for a special adopter who understands his medical needs and will spoil him with love, attention, and plenty of belly rubs. If you’re ready to welcome a resilient, affectionate little guy into your life, Paco can’t wait to meet you!
